As a Marine Welder, you will be responsible for performing welding and fabrication tasks in the marine industry. Your primary focus will be on the construction, repair, and maintenance of marine vessels, structures, and equipment. Your expertise in welding techniques and materials will contribute to ensuring the integrity, safety, and functionality of maritime assets.

As a Maritime Structural Fitter, you will play a vital role in the construction, repair, and maintenance of maritime vessels, structures, and equipment. You will work closely with engineers, welders, and fabricators to ensure precise fitting and alignment of structural components, ensuring the integrity and safety of maritime assets. Your expertise in blueprint interpretation, layout, and fitting techniques will contribute to the successful completion of marine construction and repair projects.

As a Pipefitter in the marine industry, you will play a crucial role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of piping systems aboard vessels, offshore platforms, and maritime facilities. You will collaborate closely with engineers, welders, and other trades to fabricate, assemble, and test piping systems that transport fluids and gases safely and efficiently. Your skills in blueprint interpretation, pipe layout, and fitting techniques will ensure accurate alignment, proper flow, and structural integrity of all piping assemblies. Your attention to detail and precision will contribute to the reliability and safety of vital marine systems.

As a Maritime Inside Machinist, you will create parts by operating various machines (manual and/or CNC) such as; lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, horizontal boring mills, etc. Inside machinists also troubleshoot operations and take appropriate actions to correct them. The machinists perform quality inspections, verifying that the dimensions of workpieces are in accordance with drawing specifications.

As a Maritime Outside Machinist, you will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical systems and equipment on maritime vessels. Your primary focus will be on the propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, and various mechanical components crucial for the efficient operation of marine vessels. Your expertise in machining, mechanical assembly, and troubleshooting will contribute to the reliable performance and safety of maritime assets.

As a Marine Electrical Technician, you will play a critical role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment on maritime vessels. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, communication, navigation, and control systems. Your expertise in marine electrical systems, troubleshooting, and compliance with industry regulations will contribute to the reliable performance and safety of maritime assets.

As a Marine Electrical Technician, you will play a critical role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment on maritime vessels. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, communication, navigation, and control systems. As a Marine Insulator, your specialization lies in the insulation, installation, and upkeep of marine vessels, offshore platforms, and maritime structures. Your pivotal role revolves around establishing and preserving a secure and efficient operational environment. This involves insulating diverse components and systems against heat, cold, noise, and fire hazards. Your collaborative efforts with shipbuilding firms, offshore oil and gas operations, and maintenance teams are crucial in delivering effective insulation solutions.

As a Marine Sheet Metal Fabricator, your role will be essential in the construction, maintenance, and repair of maritime vessels and structures. You will specialize in fabricating and installing sheet metal components used in various applications onboard ships, offshore platforms, and other maritime installations.

As a Maritime Coating Specialist, you will be responsible for applying protective coatings and surface treatments to maritime vessels, structures, and equipment. Your primary focus will be on preserving and enhancing the integrity and longevity of maritime assets by preventing corrosion, ensuring proper adhesion, and achieving aesthetic finishes.

As a Merchant Seaman, also known as a Merchant Marine, your role is absolutely vital when it comes to working with commercial ships engaged in various maritime activities. Your contributions are central to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of vessels, managing cargo handling, and skillfully navigating the seas. You would serve in different capacities and departments on board ships, collectively contributing to the smooth functioning of maritime operations.

As an Offshore Wind Turbine Technician, you will be responsible for the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of wind turbines located in offshore wind farms. Your role will involve working at sea, often in challenging weather conditions, to ensure the reliable and efficient operation of wind energy systems. You will play a vital role in the renewable energy sector, contributing to the production of clean and sustainable electricity.

As a Maritime Commercial Driver, you will play a crucial role in the transportation of goods and materials within the maritime industry. You will primarily operate commercial vehicles, such as trucks and trailers, to transport cargo to and from ports, terminals, warehouses, and other maritime facilities.

When Kaushik first began his journey with the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System, he was determined to build a career that would provide both stability and pride. After completing his classes—with their fair share of ups and downs—he passed both exams and earned his OSHA 10 certification. With his credentials in hand, Kaushik started paid training at Newport News Shipyard. He plans to apply to the apprentice school within the year to further strengthen his skills and advance his career. Kaushik is proud to contribute to the naval carriers and submarines that our sailors depend on, and he sees a promising future in the shipyard.

After enrolling in CDL training at Shippers Choice of Virginia through the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System (HRMTS), Maria took the wheel on a new career path — and hasn’t looked back. Today, she’s proudly employed by Schneider Trucking, where she’s not only loving her job, but also transforming her financial future.

“Heyyyy so glad to hear from you. Yes, I am still employed with Schneider Trucking. I love it. I make great money. What I used to make in two weeks working, I now make in one. Emmanuel Espinoza came to the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System (HRMTS) with a clear goal: to become an electrician. After touring Virginia Technical Academy (VTA), he enrolled in their Electrical Program with support from HRMTS. At VTA, Emmanuel gained hands-on experience working safely with live power and 3-way switches. His instructors helped him build a strong foundation in electrical systems, codes, and licensing—and helped him stand out during his interview with Chesapeake Controls. He landed a job as an Electrical Apprentice and is now on his way to earning his journeyman’s license!

Kayla Carter’s journey exemplifies resilience and determination. After relocating from Texas, she overcame enrollment challenges to complete her MTT Welding course and is now pursuing Flux-Cored Arc Welding. Her dedication has led to a new role as a Jr. Installation Technician full time at Prism Maritime starting January 28th. Kayla’s story highlights the rewards of perseverance and self-belief.

Eamon completed and successfully passed welding training at QED. His top marks and impressive skills landed him a position with TCT. Excited to start his career in the maritime industry, Eamon is ready to apply his skills and contribute to innovative projects. He credits QED and HRMTS for providing the foundation for his success and looks forward to a bright future at TCT.

Kourtney’s journey to success is a testament to resilience and dedication. Despite facing personal barriers, she enrolled in the MTT Welding Level 1 program at Virginia Peninsula Community College, driven by a strong desire for a better future. Throughout her training, Kourtney’s exceptional work ethic and passion for welding shone through, earning her admiration from instructors and peers alike. Her perseverance paid off when she graduated with flying colors and secured a job offer as a Marine Welder with Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). Kourtney’s story serves as an inspiration, showcasing how determination and hard work can overcome even the toughest of challenges, ultimately leading to a rewarding career path.

Mickel’s dedication and commitment not only earned him the respect of his instructors and classmates. Mickel is now a Sheet Metal worker at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). His story serves as an inspiration, highlighting how perseverance and resilience can triumph over transportation barriers, ultimately leading to personal and professional success.

Rodney Lee embodies resilience and determination. As a participant in the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System (HRMTS) program and a CDL student at Shipper’s Choice of Virginia, he faced challenges but remained steadfast in pursuing his goals.

The HRMTS program provided Rodney with vital resources, supportive services, and guidance, helping him stay focused and overcome obstacles. Grateful for the support, Rodney shared his appreciation, noting the staff’s patience and encouragement: “You’ve been very pleasant to work with.”

Rodney is now actively pursuing job opportunities and eagerly awaits several offers. His journey highlights the power of persistence and the impact of compassionate support in achieving success.

Before attending Virginia Technical Academy, Emmanuel Espinoza wasn’t sure what career path to take. Once he started school, he realized his interest in electrical work and gained the skills needed to pursue it. Paying for the program was a challenge, but with the help of the Hampton Roads Maritime Training System, he was able to start his training and complete the required hours toward his electrician’s license. Now, Mr. Espinoza is interviewing for jobs and looking forward to starting his career in the field. Mr. Espinoza says, “I’m so proud of myself for how much I’ve done, and I want to keep going and one day own a business of my own.” We are very proud of Mr. Espinoza too; his dedication and drive are unmatched!

After being laid off, Robert D. enrolled in the Mariner Bootcamp at the Maritime Institute in Norfolk, VA. He shared that it was “loaded with information and a hands-on learning experience,” which he appreciated and excelled in. Robert also credited Ron McMillan, the primary instructor, as a key part of his success.​

We’re proud to share that shortly after completing the training, Robert secured a job with a domestic cruise line. Robert stated, “I tell people all the time that they should contact the Workforce Council, as several classes are offered. Although it may take some time to acquire funding, the classes can be taken at no cost. It was one of the better decisions I’ve made, and I am grateful to have the opportunity.”

We are proud to celebrate the success of Shaun Howard, who recently completed his training at 160 Driving Academy with exceptional dedication and professionalism. After completing all required training hours, Shaun officially earned his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and graduated on May 13, 2025.

Shaun reached out to HRMTS for support in pursuing his goal of becoming a CDL holder and building a path toward self-sufficiency. He quickly stood out as a model participant—punctual, motivated, and consistently engaged. His instructors described him as respectful, driven, and an inspiration to those around him.

We are incredibly proud of Shaun’s accomplishments and excited to see what’s next as he begins his career in the commercial driving field. Congratulations, Shaun!
