We are proud to celebrate the success of Shaun Howard, who recently completed his training at 160 Driving Academy with exceptional dedication and professionalism. After completing all required training hours, Shaun officially earned his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and graduated on May 13, 2025.

Shaun reached out to RMTS for support in pursuing his goal of becoming a CDL holder and building a path toward self-sufficiency. He quickly stood out as a model participant—punctual, motivated, and consistently engaged. His instructors described him as respectful, driven, and an inspiration to those around him.

We are incredibly proud of Shaun’s accomplishments and excited to see what’s next as he begins his career in the commercial driving field. Congratulations, Shaun!

Emmanuel Espinoza came to the Regional Maritime Training System (RMTS) with a clear goal: to become an electrician. After touring Virginia Technical Academy (VTA), he enrolled in their Electrical Program with support from RMTS. At VTA, Emmanuel gained hands-on experience working safely with live power and 3-way switches. His instructors helped him build a strong foundation in electrical systems, codes, and licensing—and helped him stand out during his interview with Chesapeake Controls. He landed a job as an Electrical Apprentice and is now on his way to earning his journeyman’s license!

We’re proud to celebrate Emmanuel’s success!

Kayla Carter’s journey exemplifies resilience and determination. After relocating from Texas, she overcame enrollment challenges to complete her MTT Welding course and is now pursuing Flux-Cored Arc Welding. Her dedication has led to a new role as a Jr. Installation Technician full time at Prism Maritime starting January 28th. Kayla’s story highlights the rewards of perseverance and self-belief.

Eamon completed and successfully passed welding training at QED. His top marks and impressive skills landed him a position with TCT. Excited to start his career in the maritime industry, Eamon is ready to apply his skills and contribute to innovative projects. He credits QED and RMTS for providing the foundation for his success and looks forward to a bright future at TCT.

Kourtney’s journey to success is a testament to resilience and dedication. Despite facing personal barriers, she enrolled in the MTT Welding Level 1 program at Virginia Peninsula Community College, driven by a strong desire for a better future. Throughout her training, Kourtney’s exceptional work ethic and passion for welding shone through, earning her admiration from instructors and peers alike. Her perseverance paid off when she graduated with flying colors and secured a job offer as a Marine Welder with Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). Kourtney’s story serves as an inspiration, showcasing how determination and hard work can overcome even the toughest of challenges, ultimately leading to a rewarding career path.

Mickel’s dedication and commitment not only earned him the respect of his instructors and classmates. Mickel is now a Sheet Metal worker at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). His story serves as an inspiration, highlighting how perseverance and resilience can triumph over transportation barriers, ultimately leading to personal and professional success.

Rodney Lee embodies resilience and determination. As a participant in the Regional Maritime Training System (RMTS) program and a CDL student at Shipper’s Choice of Virginia, he faced challenges but remained steadfast in pursuing his goals.

The RMTS program provided Rodney with vital resources, supportive services, and guidance, helping him stay focused and overcome obstacles. Grateful for the support, Rodney shared his appreciation, noting the staff’s patience and encouragement: “You’ve been very pleasant to work with.”

Rodney is now actively pursuing job opportunities and eagerly awaits several offers. His journey highlights the power of persistence and the impact of compassionate support in achieving success.

Before attending Virginia Technical Academy, Emmanuel Espinoza wasn’t sure what career path to take. Once he started school, he realized his interest in electrical work and gained the skills needed to pursue it. Paying for the program was a challenge, but with the help of the Regional Maritime Training System, he was able to start his training and complete the required hours toward his electrician’s license. Now, Mr. Espinoza is interviewing for jobs and looking forward to starting his career in the field. Mr. Espinoza says, “I’m so proud of myself for how much I’ve done, and I want to keep going and one day own a business of my own.” We are very proud of Mr. Espinoza too; his dedication and drive are unmatched!

After being laid off, Robert D. enrolled in the Mariner Bootcamp at the Maritime Institute in Norfolk, VA. He shared that it was “loaded with information and a hands-on learning experience,” which he appreciated and excelled in. Robert also credited Ron McMillan, the primary instructor, as a key part of his success.

We’re proud to share that shortly after completing the training, Robert secured a job with a domestic cruise line. Robert stated, “I tell people all the time that they should contact the Workforce Council, as several classes are offered. Although it may take some time to acquire funding, the classes can be taken at no cost. It was one of the better decisions I’ve made, and I am grateful to have the opportunity.”

We’re thrilled about Robert’s success and look forward to seeing all the great things he will accomplish in the maritime industry!
